Bookanista post

When I was asked by Mark Reynolds at Bookansita – respository of all things literary – to write a piece about why I dedicated my novel Attend to ‘the original Deborah Wybrow’, I jumped at the chance of explaining how a real life figure from the early nineteenth century was the inspiration for my central character, who is still alive […]

Metro article

Books by admin0 comments

On 7 January an article I wrote about Deptford appeared in the Metro newspaper – in print and online. I was commissioned to write a piece about the tunnels under Deptford streets, and how they inspired the tunnels in my novel Attend. I confess to delight when I saw that I had a full page, and that the picture editor […]

Attend at the printing factory

Books by admin0 comments

Danny Emerson at CPI, Orenda Books’ printer, has made this fascinating and – for a debut author – kind of moving little film. It shows my novel, Attend, coming off the printing presses and going through the various cutting and finishing stages of the factory process before being wrapped and readied for delivery to bookshops. I’m so thankful to Danny for […]

Attend – my debut novel

Books by admin0 comments

So the news is out – my debut novel, Attend, will be published by Orenda Books in autumn 2018. As you’ll see from my other posts on this site, I work as an editor at Orenda Books, so it took a little bit of sneakiness on my part to get my novel into the submissions pile (under a different name). […]

Best European Fiction 2015

Books by admin0 comments

In 2014 I was editor of the 2015 issue of Best European Fiction, Dalkey Archive Press’s noteworthy annual anthology. It was a great pleasure to be set free on a huge pile of submissions from across Europe, and to select and compile what I thought were the best, most original and most interesting 33 stories. Starting out with no clear […]

About West Camel

Born and bred in south London – and not the Somerset village with which I share a name – I worked as an editor in higher education and business before turning my attention to the arts and publishing.

I have worked as a book and arts journalist, and was editor at Dalkey Archive Press, where I edited the Best European Fiction 2015 anthology, before moving to new press Orenda Books just after its launch.

I currently combine my work as editor at Orenda with editing the European Literature Network’s #RivetingReviews. I am also the editor of the Network’s print magazine, The Riveter.

I have written several short scripts, which have been produced in London’s fringe theatres, and was longlisted for the Old Vic’s 12 playwrights project.

My debut novel, Attend, was shortlisted for the Polari Prize in 2019. My new novel, Fall was published by Orenda Books in December 2021.
