Attend at the printing factory

Attend at the printing factory

Books by admin0 comments

Danny Emerson at CPI, Orenda Books’ printer, has made this fascinating and – for a debut author – kind of moving little film. It shows my novel, Attend, coming off the printing presses and going through the various cutting and finishing stages of the factory process before being wrapped and readied for delivery to bookshops. I’m so thankful to Danny for […]

Attend – my debut novel

Books by admin0 comments

So the news is out – my debut novel, Attend, will be published by Orenda Books in autumn 2018. As you’ll see from my other posts on this site, I work as an editor at Orenda Books, so it took a little bit of sneakiness on my part to get my novel into the submissions pile (under a different name). […]

The Baltics Riveter

Editing by admin0 comments

To celebrate London Book Fair’s Baltics Market Focus, the European Literature Network published another edition of its print magazine, The Riveter, edited by me and Riveter-in-Chief Rosie Goldsmith. With commissioned artwork and extracts and features by London Book Fair’s three Authors of the Day – Kristina Sabaliauskaitė, Nora Ikstena and Mihkel Mutt, this may well have been our most successful magazine […]

The Nordic Riveter

In autumn 2017 I once again edited (with Riveter-in-Chief Rosie Goldsmith) The Riveter, the European Literature Network’s print magazine. This edition was our longest so far, and was devoted to literature from the Nordic countries. Esteemed Norwegian crime writer Gunnar Staalesen was our guest editor, and we were honoured to include content from luminaries from across the region, including an […]

Interview with The Book Trail

In August, I was interviewed by award-winning book blogger The Book Trail. The focus of the Q&A was The Riveter magazine, which I edit, and the European Literature Network, which I write and edit for; but we also discussed my work for Orenda Books and how I came to work in publishing and arts journalism. You can read the interview here: http://www.thebooktrail.com/translated-fiction-european-literature-network/

In August, the second edition of The Riveter was published by the European Literature Network. The Riveter magazine – Polish writing

To celebrate The London Book Fair 2017 Poland Market Focus, the European Literature Network launched its very first print magazine, The Riveter. Born out of the Network’s monthly #Riveting Reviews and with much help from a range of knowledgeable and discerning contributors, the magazine is guest edited by Deborah Levy, with a cover illustration by Chris Riddell. I had the […]

Iceland Noir – Iceland’s Festival of Crime Fiction

Reviews by admin0 comments

In November, I travelled to Reykjavík with Karen Sullivan and a host of Orenda authors for Iceland Noir – a crime fiction festival organised by two of those authors and an Orenda translator, among others. Attended by crime fiction greats such as Val McDermid (who gave the keynote speech) Ann Cleeves and Yrsa Sigurðardóttir, the three days of talks were […]

An Interview with Translator Don Bartlett

Interviews by admin0 comments

In September my interview with Norwegian < English translator, Don Bartlett was published on the  ELit Literature House Europe website and the European Literature Network. I have worked with Don on his translations of Gunnar Staalesen’s crime novels for Orenda Books; and in preparation for the interview, I took my first plunge into Karl Ove Knausgaard’s remarkable work. The result […]

About West Camel

Born and bred in south London – and not the Somerset village with which I share a name – I worked as an editor in higher education and business before turning my attention to the arts and publishing.

I have worked as a book and arts journalist, and was editor at Dalkey Archive Press, where I edited the Best European Fiction 2015 anthology, before moving to new press Orenda Books just after its launch.

I currently combine my work as editor at Orenda with editing the European Literature Network’s #RivetingReviews. I am also the editor of the Network’s print magazine, The Riveter.

I have written several short scripts, which have been produced in London’s fringe theatres, and was longlisted for the Old Vic’s 12 playwrights project.

My debut novel, Attend, was shortlisted for the Polari Prize in 2019. My new novel, Fall was published by Orenda Books in December 2021.
